A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A Letter to the Luminous Deep is an epistolary steampunk fantasy set 1000 years after a great flood destroyed the world. Recluse E and her boyfriend/scholar Henerey have disappeared into a glowing structure below E’s strange coral home, causing E’s sister Sophy and Henry’s brother Vyerin to exchange letters poring through their late siblings’ correspondence. Sylvia Cathrall’s world is well-drawn and an absolute joy to swim through. However, the plot boils down to characters intentionally withholding vital information for reasons that don’t really hold water (pun intended). It’s also more of a prologue novel (the sequel is forthcoming) than a stand-alone story. Is it interesting? Will I pick up the sequel? Yes and yes. Luminous Deep, however, feels more like an early-season episode that you have to "get through" before the series hits its stride.
