Book Bites: Tacky

Tacky: Love Letters to the Worst Culture We Have to OfferTacky: Love Letters to the Worst Culture We Have to Offer by Rax King
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It would probably be more accurate for this book to be titled, "Tacky: A Memoir of Low Culture." King is a deft, sharp writer and the text overflows with wit and charm. The book is at its best when King waxes poetic on the band Creed, on Josie and the Pussycats, on Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri. Extended passages on King's personal life, though always connected to one item of low culture or another (her comparing her sex life to Samantha's from Sex in the City), tend to drag. In the end, though, Tacky is a thoroughly enjoyable meditation on how even 'low art' can move us in profound and meaningful ways.
