Nothing in the summary—young orphan narrates his boyhood in turn-of-the-millennium rural Virginia—screams “must read.” But it is. Demon’s narration is acerbic and witty and crystal clear. Laughing out loud while reading this is not an uncommon experience. Nor is shedding a tear. Kingsolver has perfectly captured the millennial teenage boy and woven a coming of age story to rival Dickens.
