Book Bites: All Systems Red

All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1)All Systems Red by Martha Wells
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There is something innately endearing about a "murderbot" whose only real desire is to sit in their chambers and binge trash TV. Because what do we do when we suddenly can do anything we want? Perhaps owing to its novella wordcount, the plotting of All Systems Red feels cluttered; a peaceful science crew on a planetary mission suddenly find themselves under attack with only a lone (defective) SecUnit, a.k.a. murderbot, to defend them. Some crew members only exist as names on a page and the narration is, at times, bare-bones. But there's heart and humor enough to keep readers thoroughly enthralled and, given the novella's "Incredible Hulk" ending, asking for more.
