To say Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng is horror at its finest sounds unnecessarily limiting. Yes, it is a horror novel of the COVID-19 pandemic, using ghosts, using suspense (using buckets of blood) as a mirror to show the true horror that can take root in a human soul. But it is also literate and beautiful, a searing reproach of anti-Asian hate and blind adherence to the status quo. The plotting is not perfect, and late sections drip with blood in a way that feels narratively self-defeating, but these qualms feel small when Bat Eater so deftly and entertainingly shows how true evil manifests.
